Year 4 Camp
How exciting for our Year 4’s who headed off to camp on Wednesday. It was a pleasure to visit the site on Thursday morning and enjoy breakfast with the students and spend the morning session with them. It is always lovely to observe students outside of the normal school environment and see them challenge themselves in new and different ways. We are so fortunate at Runcorn State School to have staff that volunteer their time to support our camp program. A big thank you to the staff involved for being away from your own families in order to provide this experience for our students.
The New Play Spaces
The new play spaces are now fully open. It is wonderful to see students back on our playground equipment and enjoying the interactive natural elements of the new areas. We have trees being trimmed in this area within the next week and then our new shade cloths will be installed. What an exciting time for our students. We would like to remind parents that these play spaces, just like our playgrounds, are unsupervised before 8.45am and at the end of the school day, from 3.00pm onwards. It should be noted that Community Members, Parents or Guardians cannot provide supervision at these times, even for their own child/children, unless a request to use school facilities has been submitted and approved. This is because PCYC (Before and After School Care) providers have access to our play spaces at this time, supervising the registered students only. We thank you for your cooperation.
Please Keep our Children Safe
Many of us never give a second thought as to which side of the road we should drop off or collect our children. It is much safer for your children and other motorists if your children leave the car from the rear kerb side door. This stops children getting out of the car into oncoming traffic and reduces their risk of them being injured. It is safer if you park on the school side of the road. Please take care not to park in the ‘No Parking’ and ‘No Stopping’ areas marked around our school as this puts children at unnecessary risk.
We are very fortunate to have manned school crossings around our school. Unfortunately, it has been reported to me that parents are pulling up on the opposite side of Ardargie Street and children are crossing the road but not using the supervised crossing. This concerns me as this is a very busy thoroughfare. Please take care around our school and ensure your children use the crossings provided to us to keep our children safe.

The Big Write
The Big Write has continued into Term 4. This week’s prompt was simply the word SCARED.
I was lucky enough to have three authors visit me from 1S to share their tales of Halloween, lost kittens and a creepy forest.
I also had some creative poets in 4R share their efforts using the SCARED prompt. Below is one of many impressive poems from 4R, written by Erin.
“Once upon a rhyme. 3:00am is a scary time. Bones are creaking. While you are sleeping. Ashes fall to the ground while you hear a scary sound. You probably wouldn’t of been scared. If you were paired. Halloween night is where things go far from right. You see a nun. You need to RUN RUN RUN.
You were dared but you pretended to not be scared. The amount of fear will make you scream” MAMA MIA!” Have a scare as you hear a tear. You run up to a tree. You hear a moan and you begin to flee. You hear a knife that sounds like a scythe. It is very clear that you are in fear. You can’t train if you are in pain. You here an aroooo. But what are you going to do. No one cared that you are scared. You are in grave. No save. You see a spider yes your a rider. Are you gonna RUN RUN RUN from that nun. You see a door. Still no score. Keep running
You really cunning. Run from this nightmare see the sight yeah. The end”
I can’t wait to see what else our creative writers come up with over the next 7 weeks!

Environment Club
The Environment Club has started collecting paper and cardboard from classrooms this term. Year 4 and 5 students will collect and empty the paper waste on Thursdays into a special yellow bin for waste pick up on Friday.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IP0Ch1Va44&t=20s
Above is a video about paper recycling. It could be a discussion starter to help your children understand why the new bin is in the classrooms. There are plenty of other types of videos available that are worth a look. Just head to Youtube.
The collection of plastic bottles, poppers etc for the Containers for Change program is going well. Year 5 students are making sure that the clear containers are in both eating areas. We have raised $100 worth of much needed funds for the school. Any community member keen to contribute to this project can deposit their glass, plastic and cans in the TOMRA Reverse Vending Machine near Macgregor State Primary School (pictured) or at the Return-It Centre at 137 Ingram Road, Acacia Ridge (using the Scheme ID number below).
Sports equipment has been ordered using the Wonder Bread Bags points Runcorn State School collected. Looking forward to the delivery of these items soon.
Lastly, the Heritage Garden is growing fabulously with lettuces and tomatoes being picked for the Tuckshop. Very much aware that the plants are a little squished under the nets but we have successfully prevented the possums feasting on our vegetables. Ideas are being floated around about how we can grow some of the taller plants. Please email suggestions to the P & C Association (rsspcsecretary@outlook.com) or Mrs McNamara (jmcna155@eq.edu.au) or Ms Daglish (mdagl3@eq.edu.au). Again, thank you for all your support with these ventures.
Please remind students that Environment Club is open to all year levels and will be held:
Tuesday lunchtime 11:30am – Ms Daglish
Thank you so much to the Runcorn community for the support with collecting of bread/wrap bags. Families can continue to recycle plastics at any REDCYCLE outside most supermarkets. Also a big thank you for encouraging students to use the Containers for Change tubs. Now we are hoping to make a difference to paper waste throughout the school.
National Bandanna Day & Day for Daniel - 28 October 2022
On Friday the 28th of October, Runcorn State School is celebrating Bandanna Day by raising funds for Canteen, an organisation who supports children touched by cancer. The Student Council is selling bandannas for $5 opposite the Tuckshop area every morning from Monday 24th October until Friday 28th October. Get in quick before they are sold out!
Also on Friday the 28th October, it is Day for Daniel where students can wear red to school to raise awareness about child safety. In class, students will be practising the skills to RECOGNISE, REACT, AND REPORT unsafe situations from a program created by Mr and Mrs Morecombe after the loss of their son Daniel. There is no gold coin collection for this day as it is a day of reflection and awareness.
Runcorn Reading Club
Runcorn Reading Club
When: Wednesday morning before school 8:15am
Where: outside 2IH classroom, D Block
The Runcorn State School little library book exchange trolley is out and available for all students to enjoy during reading club. It is loaded with beautiful books donated by Runcorn families.
How it works:
Take a book - If children see a book they’d like to read they can take it with them to read at home or in class. Once they have finished with it they can return it to the trolley.
Give a book - if children would like to keep the book. They can bring one from home to leave on the trolley in it’s place. Happy Reading!

Norman's News
There has been such a woof around the classrooms the past few weeks and it has been pawsome to have been a part of many learning activities at Runcorn.
The Year 1 students challenged me to lay very still while they measured how long I was from my front paws to the end of my very fluffy tail. They also creatively outlined me with chalk so that I could move to the side and observe their measurements with a ruler! I was impressed with the “lengths” that the students went to include me in their outdoor lesson time!
I was also very lucky to receive a letter written by the students in Prep B as they began their letter-writing unit of work. I was dog-gone excited to see how hard they had worked to collaboratively construct their letter. Of course, I barked out a reply as quickly as I could and raced it back to the Prep B Letterbox!
I also assisted the Year 3 students with their poetry unit! I was humbled to hear that 3K had analysed the poem that I wrote about the holidays and the students did an amazing job of illustrating their favourite two lines.
I hope to include some of 3C's work next time, as I was with them this morning while they brainstormed some ideas, about me, using their 5 senses. Stay tuned for those! I’m sure you will be as pleased as I was to hear that I “smell like roses” after I’ve been to Paws Only Grooming!
Until next time, big licks and tail wags,
Norman x

Delivery is expected the week of the 5th December but exact date to be advised.
END OF YEAR CONCERT RAFFLES
Each year at our End of Year Concert, the P&C have a “mega” raffle where you can purchase tickets to win a wonderful hamper full of goodies. These hampers are put together by the P&C but are reliant on the kind donations of our school community to make them spectacular!
There is one raffle basket for each class and all classes have chosen their own theme. It is hoped that students will contribute an item (or more if you wish) which compliments the class theme and will add to the excitement of the raffle. Class letters have now been sent home and class themes are listed below.
