Newsletter Term 4 Week 1
From the Principal
Welcome Back
A big welcome back to all students and families. When I walk around the school I see students learning in calm and organised classes and high-quality teaching taking place. Our school has a lot to be proud of regarding the effort that we’re making towards improving student learning outcomes. There was a lot to celebrate during Term 3. Students and parents had a wonderful time at the P&C Disco, the music showcase delighted everyone that attended and we also had the Science Fair that was a resounding success.
Term 4
Term 4 is always an exciting term for students with swimming, concerts and end of year celebrations. However, we will continue to focus on quality teaching and learning and strike a balance between the events and the core business. During the course of the Term, the school will begin to prepare for the year ahead. We will meet the 2023 Prep students as well as other students joining us in the new year. Sadly, we also say goodbye to our Year 6 students and other families that might be moving away from Runcorn. To this end, if you know that you are not returning in 2023, please notify the office by email by 30 October on admin@runcornss.eq.edu.au. This will help us predict, as accurately as possible, our numbers for next year.
Requests for specific teachers will not be considered
When organising class groupings for the upcoming year our staff commit a lot of time to working out the best combinations. This takes many weeks and many drafts of classes as well as matching teachers to class groups. I believe and trust that our teachers will do the best they can to make sure classes are balanced and have the right combinations for teaching and learning in 2023. If you have any considerations regarding classes for 2023, please see your child’s teacher. These requests will be considered when class lists are being formulated. Teachers may be changing year levels so please do not put in any requests for specific teachers. We thank you for your support with this process. Next year we are expecting approximately 470 students and 20 class teachers.
New speed camera technology
In a world-first road safety initiative, new speed camera technology will soon target speeding drivers at selected school zones across Queensland. Everyone has a role in keeping our roads safe. It is imperative drivers reduce their speed to the signed 40 km/h speed limit and be aware of activity by students on or near the road. Speed cameras will only operate during school zone times at the selected schools. Parents and Carers dropping off or picking up students are urged to comply with school zone speed limits. Those who slow down will not be penalised.

2023 School Stationery Lists
2023 School Stationery Lists will be sent home with students this week.
It is recommended that families purchase stationery items as early as possible and don’t risk being caught up in supply issues that occur in January each year.

Inquiry Learning at Runcorn
We are continuously embedded Inquiry Learning here at Runcorn. As Teachers we are always providing provocations to encourage all students to be curious and ask questions across all learning areas. We facilitate opportunities for students to be leaders of their own learning and wonderings. We explicitly teach the skills and content required for our students to build on their prior knowledge and experience base.
Students use and apply The Learning Assets across all learning areas to support their own personal inquiry journeys. These assets are explicitly taught, scaffolded and broken down so every student knows when and how to use each one.

The RACQ Community and Education Team will be delivering the Streets Ahead road safety program to Prep to Year 6 students from Wednesday 5 October to Friday 7 October.
To reinforce and extend your child’s learning of pedestrian, passenger and riding safety, you can access Resource Packs with different age-appropriate activities for Prep to Year 6 in each. In addition to these packs, there is also four educational videos demonstrating the strategies taught for Prep – Year 2 students.
These resources will assist you to continue teaching road safety, implementing the strategies your children will learn, and applying them to your everyday lives. Resources and more information can be found here: https://www.racq.com.au/streetsahead

Runcorn Reading Club
Runcorn Reading Club
When: Wednesday morning before school 8:15am
Where: outside 2IH classroom, D Block
The Runcorn State School little library book exchange trolley is out and available for all students to enjoy during reading club. It is loaded with beautiful books donated by Runcorn families.
How it works:
Take a book - If children see a book they’d like to read they can take it with them to read at home or in class. Once they have finished with it they can return it to the trolley.
Give a book - if children would like to keep the book. They can bring one from home to leave on the trolley in it’s place.
Happy Reading!

Norman's News
Welcome back to Term 4! I hope that you had a “pawsome” holiday and that you have come back to Runcorn feeling as eager as I am when I hear Mrs Schooth open her treat bag! I noticed that many of you have returned with big smiles and as I bounded in and out of classrooms this morning with Mrs Schooth I felt excited about all of the interesting learning activities that this term will hold. As poetry was one of the topics for some year levels, I thought that I would take the “oppawtunity” to describe my holidays using Poetry.
The Holidays Were Fun
My ears were alert and my tongue was out,
I was so happy I could almost shout.
I had more time than ever to play out the back,
To pull all of the chew toys out of the sack.
Time to dig holes in the freshly laid sand,
Ready in the garden to lend Mum a hand.
I had time on the couch to chill out and stretch,
And plenty of time with my ball to play fetch.
I had time for walks and to work on my “training”,
And plenty of time to get wet when it was raining.
I had time for walks in lots of great parks,
And glorious time to share my stories in barks.
Lots of time to lie around as I do
But after a while, I began to miss you.
Holidays are fun… but school days are too-
So I’m glad to be back wearing my Runcorn Blue!
With big licks and tail wags,
Norman
