Newsletter Term 4 Week 5
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Carers
Year 5 Camp
The Year 5 campers had an amazing time at camp. This provided opportunities for children to grow in independence and step out of their comfort zone. Ms Matlock and I shared the time with the students and thoroughly enjoyed participating with them in the activities.
I would like to welcome Mr Bryon Pearson to the school. He is replacing Mr Biedermann who is on leave for a month. Mr Pearson is an experienced Strings and Brass Instrumental Teacher.
Thinking is the cornerstone for all learning. It is becoming increasingly obvious that students at this school are conscious of their thought processes and considering ideas more deeply. We have been reflecting on the goals set at the beginning of the year. It is very pleasing to see how students have grown in their ability to take ownership of their learning. Many students are able to clearly articulate what they are learning and their learning goals. The Assistant Regional Director visited the school last week and went into a few classrooms. He was impressed with the level of engagement students showed. Inquiry is being embedded and the targets of students using the language of the learner assets has been met. Please encourage your children to talk to you about what they are learning and their progress towards their learning goals.
Remembrance Day
On Thursday 11 November we will hold our Runcorn State School Remembrance Day ceremony at 10.30am. You are welcome to attend. Our nation stops for a minute as we remember those who gave their lives for our freedom. On the 11th of November, 1945 the war ended. Then known as Armistice Day, today we refer to it as Remembrance Day. It is not to glorify war but to remember the brave. It is not to encourage the young to fight but to encourage bravery.
Student Safety
I would like to remind students of a few school rules. Adhering to them, makes life easier for all members of the school.
- Students arriving early must sit under A Block. It is preferred that no students come before 8am.
- Playgrounds, oval and rainforests are not in use before school.
- Children running around buildings before school will be asked to sit on the benches.
- After school, children must either be with their parents or wait at the pick-up area with the staff member on duty.
These procedures might seem stern but are in place for the safety of all students.
Michelle D'Netto
From the Deputy Principal
As we enter the final five weeks of the school year, please remember that we will continue with our learning to the end of the Term. Attendance is important and if students cannot attend school, we need to know that Parents/Carers know where they are. Accordingly, please ensure that you text the School Absence Line on 0429 928 611 or leave a phone message on the school office line (07) 3323 8777, Option 1, outlining your child's name, class and reason for absence. All students benefit from an organised, unrushed start to the school day by arriving before the bell.

World Teachers' Day 2021
This is Darcy, one of your 2021 School Captains. I have a very important announcement to make. We all know that today is the Day for Daniel and Bandanna Day. But today is a very special day for another reason. It is World Teachers' Day.
This is a day when we especially want to say thank you to our teachers for the amazing work they do for us.
And we know that our teachers at Runcorn State School are very special don't we? They are always there to help us not only to learn and grow in our knowledge but help shape our lives to become better people. So I think they deserve a very special Runcorn thank you!
Hip hip hooray! Hip hip hooray! And one more very special thank you - Hip hip hooray!!!! Thank you everyone and Happy World Teachers' Day to our amazing teachers.
Darcy 6J, School Captain

The students have been busy borrowing Norman’s favourite books this week. Thanks Norman for taking the time to sniff out these fabulous books for us to enjoy!
We are seeking volunteers to cover library books at home …. if you would like to help please email admin@runcornss.edu.au or phone the office to arrange to collect a small box of books to cover.
Thank you!

Norman's News
This time of year is filled with so much activity as I continue with my training and enjoy spending time with the staff and students at Runcorn State School. I am really concentrating on listening to Mrs Schooth’s commands and trying my best to sit and wait before I enter a classroom. I do get confused if I hear students calling my name, so even though it is exciting to see me near your room, it is much better for me if you just wait quietly until Mrs Schooth lets me know what she is wanting me to do.
Last week it was great to see the Year 6's doing such a great job selling bandannas for Canteen. I enjoyed watching so many students supporting such a great cause and was most impressed with the fabulously designed bandanna that was chosen for me. I certainly wore it with pride around the school. On Thursday I also got to dress up in red to show my support for Day for Daniel. It was so cool to discover that my bandanna matched Mr Garcia’s! Dressing up seems to be something that makes lots of people happy and I try to be patient and tolerant when Mrs Schooth tries out different costumes on me. I am looking forward to wearing a “therapy dog in training” vest soon!
Speaking of dressing up (this time with my own backpack!), I have also started Doggie Daycare at Vetlove Kuraby. I will go every Friday as part of my training to be less excited around other dogs. I think that I will have lots of fun playing with the other puppies there and will hopefully learn that I do not need to bark when I see other four-legged friends!
Until next time, big licks and lots of tail-wagging,
Norman

Volunteers
Our Tuckshop relies on the generosity of volunteers to make it a success, and to offer students and staff an extensive menu 5 days a week. To help make the load lighter for our Convenors, we need as many helpers as we can get – mums, dads, and grandparents. This year we have lost some of our dedicated Tuckshop Volunteers due to their children moving on to high school. Volunteering in the Tuckshop on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis is a great opportunity to participate in the school community and meet other parents. If you can spare as little as 30 minutes after school drop-off, or a couple of hours from 9am-11am, please contact our convenors at tuckshop@runcornss.eq.edu.au or via the Runcorn P&C Facebook Page. We have a variety of jobs available.
