Newsletter Term 4 Week 3
Dear Parents and Carers
Thank you all so much for coming and making the ARTS FAIR such a big success. I would like to thank the organising committee for the many hours of work put into this celebration. Together, the staff and P&C worked to ensure that Runcorn and its 120 years of state education was on display. To everyone who helped – a big thank you. I would also like to thank our sponsors and Local Members for their support.
The school has begun to prepare for the year ahead. If you know that you are not returning in 2022, please complete the form attached to this newsletter and return it to the office by 30 October. It is important that we predict as accurate as possible numbers for next year as our staffing model is determined by enrolment.
We are also taking enrolments for Prep 2022. If you have not booked your meeting with the teacher, please do so as soon as possible.

From the Deputy Principal
Thank you to all staff, parents, carers, performers and volunteers who contributed to the 120 Year Celebration Community Arts Fair. It was an absolutely fantastic evening which showcased student created and performance art. The Memory Lane was a wonderful display of memorabilia, appreciated by many on the night and students this week.

The Big Write
We have kicked off The Big Write to great success. It has been fantastic to see students and teachers creating amazing pieces of writing, giving and receiving feedback, sharing and celebrating! I’m yet to receive any writing from our community so parents, grandparents, older siblings, aunties, uncles and other special adults, the challenge is on! Send your writing to rlasa2@eq.edu.au using any of the prompts below.

EATSIPS (Embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in Schools)
Dear Parents/Carers/Community members,
I am pleased to inform you that Runcorn State School has committed to developing a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). Our RAP aims to support our school community in developing an educational environment that fosters higher levels of knowledge and pride in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories cultures and contributions. Through our RAP, we will commit to strengthening relationships, respect and opportunities in the classroom, around the school and with the community.
Developing our RAP is a long-term commitment that will require ongoing consideration and collaborative effort. Within our community, there is unique knowledge and valuable experience that we would love to see reflected in the Actions that we commit to in our RAP. Therefore, to ensure our RAP creates meaningful and sustainable change, we would like to seek your support. This letter is a call to action for parents/carers/community members to express their interest in helping to drive our RAP development and implementation journey.
If you would like to be involved in any way with the development and ongoing implementation of our RAP, including being part of the RAP Working Group, please get in touch with myself or another staff member via email: sjarv3@eq.edu.au to discuss further. Our next EATSIPS (Embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in Schools) meeting to discuss this RAP is Friday 5th November 8:00am in the School Library.

From the Strings Teacher
Thank you and congratulations to the String Students for their outstanding performances at the 120 Year Celebration Community Arts Fair last Friday. Students in Beginner, Junior and Senior Strings played extremely well and should be very proud of their achievement.
String Students have an excellent record for attending rehearsals. Rehearsals are held in the Music Room located in B Block. Future rehearsals for String groups are as follows:
Week | Date | Activity |
Week 4 | Tues 26th Oct | Senior String Orchestra Rehearsal – 7.40 - 8.40 am Beginner Strings Rehearsal – 11.15 – 11.45 am Junior String Orchestra Rehearsal - 3.00 - 4.00 pm |
Week 5 | Tues 2nd Nov | Senior String Orchestra Rehearsal – 7.40 - 8.40 am Beginner Strings Rehearsal – 11.15 – 11.45 am Junior String Orchestra Rehearsal - 3.00 - 4.00 pm |
The String Students have a very busy schedule for the next 6 weeks – Week 3 to Week 9 of Term 4. They are getting ready for their assessment and a final concert in Week 8 - Tuesday, 23rd November, 2pm - Music Medals Ceremony. To be prepared, Students need to fill out their Practice Schedule where they show they have practised for 100 plus minutes in a week and get an adult to sign off on their practice times.
Thank you String Community for your dedication and support of our Runcorn String musicians. The String Students and I appreciate everything that you do!
Keep practising and enjoy playing your instruments.

Swimming Term 4
What a great start to swimming we had last week. There were a few clouds hanging around, but barely a drop of rain was felt. The children loved the good old joke of ‘Oh no, you’ll get wet!’ Please make sure all items of clothing are clearly named. It makes it easier when items get left behind or uniforms jump into the wrong bags. A few caps didn’t survive the winter and stopped working as we put them on. Can you please check the condition of your child's swimming cap. They are available from the Tuckshop to purchase. We look forward to more swimming fun.
Gala Day
We all looked at the sky and wondered why the weather was teasing us on Friday with such a sunny day. Unfortunately, the fields were not safe to play on after the rain earlier in the week. We all have our fingers crossed, (toes, knees and arms as well) that our next Gala Day on Friday 12th November will go ahead. It would definitely be a great way to celebrate the hard work the children have put in with their coaches this semester.
Swimming Carnival
The children have been asking if we will have a swimming carnival this term. The answer is yes. Please pencil in Monday 29th November as the day we all can show off what we have been learning to our parents and have some fun.
Surf Life Saving Queensland Incursion
As we enter the hotter months of the year pools and water will play a bigger part in our lives. As a follow up to our Water Safety messages in PE and as a timely reminder before the school holidays, I have arranged for Surf Life Saving Qld to come out and talk to all the children about how to stay safe near water and how to read the surf conditions if you head to the beach. Don’t forget to stay between the Red & Yellow Flags.

Student Resource Scheme 2022
Norman's News
I have had such an exciting fortnight at Runcorn. I have continued to work with lots of students who are always so happy and excited to see me. I really do have the best job ever as a therapy-dog-in-training. Runcorn students learn so many interesting things at school and listening to some of you read is definitely a favourite part of my day! It makes me so happy when I hear you check with Mrs Schooth if it is ok to pat me and I love it when you stroke my back.
The 120 Year Art Festival Celebrations were also a highlight for me! I am not usually out and about at night-time, so being at the school with so many people and with so many yummy things to smell was certainly a challenge for my senses! I was a little confused when I saw the “Dagwood Dog” sign, but Mrs Jarvis assured me that I was safe and that Dagwood Dogs are delicious! I am grateful to Mrs D’Netto and Mrs Forder who organised a shirt for me to wear on the night. I think the special guests that were at Runcorn thought I looked pretty dapper! I will look forward to wearing it again at future events.
Until next time, big licks and lots of tail-wagging,
Norman

Reading Club
Runcorn Reading Club
When: Friday morning before school 8:15am
Where: Outside the Resource Room and 2IS classroom
The Runcorn State School little library book exchange trolley is out and available for all students to enjoy during reading club. It is loaded with beautiful books donated by Runcorn families.
How it works:
Take a book - If children see a book they’d like to read they can take it with them to read at home or in class. Once they have finished with it they can return it to the trolley.
Donate a book - If children would like to keep the book, they can bring one from home to leave on the trolley in it’s place.
Happy Reading!

National Bandanna Day & Day for Daniel - Thursday 28th October
On Thursday the 28th of October, Runcorn State School is celebrating Bandanna Day by raising funds for Canteen, an organisation who supports children touched by cancer. The Student Council is selling bandannas for $5 outside the Tuckshop area every morning from Monday 25th October until Thursday 28th October. Get in quick before they are sold out!
Also on Thursday the 28th of October, it is Day for Daniel where students can wear red to school to raise awareness about child safety. In class, students will be practising the skills to RECOGNISE, REACT, AND REPORT unsafe situations from a program created by Mr and Mrs Morecombe after the loss of their son Daniel. There is no gold coin collection for this day as it is a day of reflection and awareness.
EALD News
A small group of Year 4 students enjoyed making cupcakes last week. Using an easy one bowl recipe, the students followed procedures, measured ingredients accurately, and later enjoyed sharing the final product with their class.
Stay tuned for more cooking adventures.

Cupcake Recipe by Donna Hay
Ingredients
125G Unsalted butter, 1¾ cups (260G) Self-raising Flour
¾ cup (165G) Caster Sugar, ½ Teaspoon Baking Powder for extra puff
2 Eggs, lightly beaten (in a small bowl), 2 teaspoons Vanilla Extract
½ cup (125ML) Milk
Method
Preheat oven to 160°C (325°F). Line 12 x ½-cup-capacity (125ml) muffin tins with paper cupcake cases.
Place the butter in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring with a spatula, until melted.
Place the flour, sugar and baking powder in a big bowl and, using a whisk, mix to combine. Add the melted butter, the eggs, vanilla and milk and whisk until well combined and smooth.
Spoon the mixture into the prepared tins. Bake for 20 minutes or until cooked when tested with a skewer. Wearing oven gloves, carefully remove the cupcakes from the oven and allow to cool in the tins for 5 minutes. Move onto wire racks to cool completely, before spreading with your favourite icing. 120 Year Celebration
WOW!! What an amazing night we had. A HUGE thank you to the organising committee, all P&C members who volunteered. We had a great turn out and hope everyone enjoyed the night.
A huge thank you to Megan Waldie, who went out into the community and sourced all of our Raffle prizes, we ended up with 18 and they were all well received. If you have been contacted as a prize winner and are yet to collect please contact Zoee to arrange.
Another HUGE thank you goes out to our food vendors who kept all the hungry bellies at bay, I hope you all had a chance to sample some of the amazing food. I will definitely be keeping details on file for future events. A particular mention goes out Julie Schooth for connecting us to her father John who is a part of the Sunnybank Hills Rotary Branch and a HUGE thank you to John, Douglas, and the volunteers from Rotary for cooking and serving our BBQ on Friday. It certainly took an element of worry away from us and we appreciate it.
We raised funds from the evening, these came from entry gate, art activities, raffles, BBQ, Macrame and a donation from the Tongan Community, gift card donation from LJ Hooker Sunnybank Hills, cash donation from Kim Marx and Food Vendor stall fees. Total funds raised was just over $4,300.00.
Well done everyone and Happy 120 years Runcorn.
Mango Fundraiser
Our annual Mango Fundraiser will take place again this term to raise much needed funds for some planned up-grades and programs for our school. This is a great opportunity to buy fresh, healthy, seasonal fruit in time for the holiday period.
We will order quality Kensington Pride mangoes directly from North Queensland farms. Collection from the school will be in the first week of December 2021 (actual delivery date will be advised the week prior to this).
For those of you who have purchased from this fundraiser before, you would know that the quality of the fruit is always excellent and the flavour better than store bought mangoes, as they are left on the tree for longer than those supplied to the markets.
We have been advised though that there is likely to be an Australia wide issue with the demand for these mangoes this year as we experienced a much warmer Winter than usual. This means that the trays will be smaller than in the past, with a lower cost also. This seems to be a fairer way to distribute the fruit that will be available. Therefore trays will be 4.5kg with a cost of $20.00.
Please offer this opportunity to as many of your friends, family, neighbours and co-workers as possible.
Please make payment directly to the P&C Bank Account (BSB 064 204 Account Number: 10025068) by Tuesday 26th October, and include your child’s surname and MANGOES as the reference. All order forms MUST be returned to the tuckshop so that we can cross check payments and quantities.
Heritage Garden
Unfortunately due to COVID lockdowns in Melbourne, the delivery of our engraved pavers had been delayed. We have now received them and have started to reschedule the installation of the heritage garden. Keep an eye out for working bee dates once the pavers have been received.
Polos
The commemoration polos that were ordered in the first round have arrived and they look amazing. Thank you to Intertrade Stationary for creating such an amazing polo. We have now commenced another opportunity to order yours, closing Friday 5 November. Keep an eye out for order forms coming home with your child.
End of Year Baskets
Please remember to give what you can for our end of year baskets. These baskets have been placed in your child's classroom to receive donations. These will be raffled off at the End of Year Concert held on Wednesday, 24 November. The themes for each class are:

2022 Events
We are busily planning our 2022 events. Is there something you would like to see? Please send us an email with your ideas rsspcevents@outlook.com
Tuckshop
Ordering
The preference is that all orders are placed on Flexi Schools. We offer a very limited over the counter menu to purchase for first break (lunch). Any payments taken over the counter or over the phone must be paid immediately, EFTPOS facilities are now available We strongly encourage you to order afternoon tea online, as afternoon tea over the counter sales are dependent on having volunteers to serve. Ice blocks can continue to be ordered online and picked up by your child from the tuckshop. Please refer to flexi schools for more information. We are able to accept cash again for ice block sales.
Slushies
Our 99% Fruit Juice Slushies are back for Term 4! They will be available for $2.00 and available at first break only. They can be pre-ordered on Flexischools (children must collect) or over the counter.
Forks and Spoons
Please ensure you pack spoons & forks with your children’s lunches from home, as these items are NOT handed out for free at the Tuckshop. Single use spoons and forks are 10c each. (Food items ordered from the Tuckshop requiring cutlery do not incur this fee).
Volunteer
Our Tuckshop relies on the generosity of volunteers to make it a success, and to offer students and staff an extensive menu 5 days a week. To help make the load lighter for our Convenors, we need as many helpers as we can get – mums, dads, and grandparents. This year we have lost some of our dedicated Tuckshop Volunteers due to their children moving on to high school. Volunteering in the Tuckshop on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis is a great opportunity to participate in the school community and meet other parents. If you can spare as little as 30 minutes after school drop-off, or a couple of hours from 9am-11am, please contact our convenors at tuckshop@runcornss.eq.edu.au or via the Runcorn P&C Facebook Page. We have a variety of jobs available.
Uniform Shop
The Uniform Shop is now open by appointment only, please use the QR code above to book your appointment. Online ordering is still available via email rssuniform@outlook.com and we will deliver your order to your child’s classroom as soon as we can.
If you have any old uniforms that you would like to donate please send them in with your child and let us know via email (rssuniform@outlook.com) and we will collect from their classroom.
