High Standards for Learning - Sharing Students’ Progress
The next formal opportunity to share your child’s learning and progress is when report cards are released in week 10. If you would like to discuss your child’s report card with their teacher please make an appointment time with them via email. We encourage parents to ensure that they have updated all contact details, especially email addresses, as soon as possible. Our report cards will be sent to parents via email by Friday 24 June.
Every Day Counts
Every day and every minute counts - I remind parents and carers that regular, continual and punctual attendance at school is a significant factor in achieving better academic and social outcomes. New concepts and skills are taught and reinforced each day by teachers. If students miss the introduction or the reinforcement of these concepts and skills, they are likely to have gaps in their learning.
Regular school attendance gives students a better chance at life. Students achieve better when they go to school all day, every school day because:
- they have increased access to learning opportunities
- they maintain friendships
- they stay connected to the curriculum progression
- they develop self-efficacy as a learner
- they have better long-term life outcomes.
Establishing good routines around school can assist with regular school attendance.
These include:
- a set time to go to bed
- preparing the uniform and school bag the night before
- a set time for starting and finishing breakfast
- setting a regular time for daily homework activities
- speaking about school positively
- sending your child to school every school day, including their birthday
If you are experiencing difficulty in sending your child to school, contact the school for advice and support. Reminder to all that school starts at 8:45am, please drop your children off at school between 8:30am and 8:45am.
Bandwidth Upgrade - Friday 24/06/2022 from 11:00am
A Telstra technician will attend our site to complete the preparatory work required to increase our band-width. This work will take up to 4.5hrs and will result in limited or no Network Access and no telephone services for up to 3hrs, however the outage is expected to be considerably shorter.
Nature Play
With our amazing play space due to be finished early next term it is a great time to think about the activities we start to plan for our children on the Winter weekends. It is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the warmth of the sunshine. Nature Play QLD has some wonderful suggestions on activities that are simple and encourage families to enjoy the outdoors. Here are a few suggestions from their website:
Sneaky secret agent, mission: bug discovery
This is your mission if you choose to accept it. Create mini search parties and seek out bugs and insects. Compare relative sizes and shapes – not all bugs are alike! For an extra challenge, try catching one in a jar, but don’t forget to let him go once you’re done. Find some pictures or a chart of bugs online and print it out so your child has a suspect in mind when he begins his search.
Star Watchers
On a clear night, you and your kids will have fun watch the night sky. Take a book our from the library and learn the stars and constellations. Greet the moon in all of its phases. Take turns having the kids learn a constellation and telling the rest of the family about it. Mark the calendar when you should be able to see the Southern Cross so you can look forward to it as a family.
There are many more ideas and activities on Nature Play QLD’s website - https://natureplayqld.org.au/
Thank You All
Thank you to our staff, who go above and beyond for our students each and every day. It takes a team to make this such a great school, a team where every member pulls in the same direction. Thank you to our Runcorn Students for your efforts and dedication to your school. Finally, thank you our parent body, community and P&C for your support. I hope all staff, students and parents have a healthy and relaxing break. Enjoy this time with your loved ones and rest up for what will be a busy and exciting Semester 2. Stay safe and see you all back for Term 3 on Monday 11 July 2022.
Keep watch on our school these holidays
With the holidays fast approaching, we are asking you to look out for after-hours crime in our school. If you see anything suspicious, please remember to call the School Watch number – 13 17 88. The School Watch program is a partnership between the Department of Education and Training, the Queensland Police Service and the State Government Protective Security Service. It aims to reduce vandalism, theft and arson in Queensland schools.

Report Cards
Semester 1 report cards will be distributed in the last week of Term 2. You may notice some subtle differences to your child’s report card this semester.
Distribution of Achievement
For the first time, a Distribution of Achievement graph will be included on all student’s report cards. The graph will show the percentage of students in your child’s cohort that achieved at each reporting level for each Learning Area. This was a function that in the past, each family could request if required.
Change in Overall Comments
Overall comments of each student will now reflect the individual learning behaviours your child has demonstrated throughout Semester 1. You will notice that the language of The Learning Assets (Collaborator, Communicator, Thinker, Self-Manager & Researcher) have been included to also reflect our use of Inquiry teaching and learning throughout the school. If you wish to further discuss your child’s progress in any Learning Area/s, please do not hesitate to contact your classroom teacher.
Subjects on Report Card
At the end of 2021, there were changes made to the Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Framework in relation to the mandatory and recommended time for teaching and assessing each Learning Area. While elements of all Learning Areas are taught every term in every year level, you may notice subjects such as The Arts, Technologies and Health & Physical Education have not been included in your child’s report for Semester 1, they will appear in Semester 2 and vice versa.
Health and Physical Education
All students receive a weekly Health lesson from our specialist Zoya Daryau, and weekly Physical Education from our specialist Leah Sutherland. On report cards the achievement mark is a combination of tasks completed in both Health and Physical Education lessons, however you may only see one of these specialists’ name on your child’s report card.
If you have any further questions regarding academic reporting feel free to contact myself or your child’s classroom teacher.

Senior Athletics Carnival
What great weather we had on Thursday & Friday for our Senior Athletics Carnival. Children were dressed in their house colours and ready to compete. Great sportsmanship was shown by all through cheering and encouraging our friends. After two well-contested days, the winning house was Grevillea.
Congratulations to Bilal who won the Coombe Shield for 2022.
District Track & Field Team
The school team will be announced by Monday 20th of June. Please complete and return forms as soon as possible.
District Rugby League Team
Congratulations to Luhama on on her selection to Eastern Taipans Girls 10 – 12 Years Rugby League Team.
Hats
Please ensure your child has a hat as they may not be able to participate in their PE lesson without one.
Long Hair
Please ensure long hair is tied up in a pony tail. Long hair gets in the way when playing sport and can cause injuries. It also interferes with your child’s ability to see when completing tasks. We want everyone to have fun and be safe.
Netball Bibs
I have some netball bibs that need new elastic sewn into them. Is there anyone who can help? If you can assist, please contact me via email lsuth18@eq.edu.au.

Environment Club News
May/June Edition
Dear Runcorn Community,
The Environment Club have fully implemented the Organic Waste program. Vegetables, herbs and pest repellent flowers have been planted in the Heritage Garden. Classes can visit at any time and it is nice to see the students exploring this space before school. The covers have been placed over the gardens to help to deter possums feasting on the crops.
The collection of BREAD BAGS and WRAP BAGS is going very well. The official WONDER boxes have arrived. One is in the front office and one is in the PCYC front entrance for the collection of both bread bags and wrap bags from any bread company, not just Wonder. The bags collected will be swapped for points towards sporting equipment for the school.
The school has also been registered to be Compost Heroes, a completely FREE school initiative launched by Maze - An Australian leader in compost & gardening solutions. Listed below is the benefits to the school. We are still waiting for this to arrive at the school.
- Free to join & receive x1 kitchen caddy for every classroom. (These will replace the containers)
- Gain entry to win up to $2000 of Maze gardening equipment.
- 30% Discount Code to use on Maze online store.
Information brochures are being sent to the school to hand out to students so watch out for these in your child’s bag. There will also be further Supporting Educational material is coming as well.
Another venture that Environment Club, along with the P&C, are hoping to launch, will be the collecting of bottles etc for the containers for change program. With help from valued community members, we are aiming to have this starting in Term 3.
Environment Club is open to all year levels and will be held:
Tuesday lunchtime 11:30am – Ms Daglish (children need to listen for the announcement)
If you have time, check out the Subpod in Prep garden and the Heritage Garden and we thank the community for support with both the collecting of fruit scraps and bread/wrap bags. Start hanging onto your bottles and we will announce when they can start coming into school with your child.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.
The Environment Club (Mrs McNamara and Ms Daglish)
Norman's News
“Dog-gone it”, this fortnight has been the best yet! Besides reading, sport is my “ultimutt” favourite activity, so watching the Mighty Maroons play in State of Origin on Wednesday night was just “pawsome”. It certainly looks like it is going to be a great competition and if the number of cupcakes that Miss Jodie made in the tuckshop is any indication of your support, Runcorn students certainly love their football! I am definitely going to have to work out how I can get my paws on one of those “pupcakes” next time!
I had a fabulous time getting my “teeth” into the Athletics Carnival on Thursday and Friday though and enjoyed cheering everyone on. It was so great to see everyone racing and showing great sportsmanship as they crossed the line in their running races – I had the best seat in the house hitting the “paws” button on the timers and getting pats from everyone as they finished their events! I should also give a big “bark out” to Ms Lambert who ran with me in one of the races on Friday – I had an absolute “ball”!
As always, if you have any questions for Mrs Schooth about my role at Runcorn, please don’t hesitate to email jscho128@eq.edu.au. I know Mrs Schooth is always keen for your feedback and queries.
Until next time,
Big licks and tail wags,
Norman xx
