Newsletter Term 2 Week 7
From the Principal
Important time
As we near the end of term, we understand that this is an important time for students as they complete their remaining work to wrap things up. Teachers are now in the middle of compiling and finalising reports and talking with students about their assessments. This feedback process is very important as our students understand what they have done well over the term and what might become a focus for Semester 2.
Prep Enrolment for 2023
Our Preparatory Year enrolment process for the 2023 school year has commenced. Recently, we welcomed families to our school for a Prep Year Information session and a morning tour of the school. There are still opportunities to access these events in term 3.
In terms of the enrolment process, parents are invited to complete an enrolment form and collect an enrolment package from the front office. To help your child prepare for Prep in 2023 there are opportunities for our new students to join our get to know you and pre-prep sessions in Term 3 and Term 4. As well as our orientation day later in Term 4. This program is a great way of connecting and engaging with our school in preparation for next year.
We encourage you to enrol your child early, to ensure your place is guaranteed for 2023 and to give us a clear idea about the number of classes we can form. All enrolments will require an interview.
NCCD - As a parent, guardian or carer, what do I need to know?
The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) is a yearly count of students by all Australian schools across the country. The aim of the NCCD is to provide the Australian Government with information about the number of students with disability in Australian schools and the type of adjustments they need in order to access and participate in education on the same basis as other students.
Your child will be included in the NCCD if they require ongoing adjustments at school due to a disability as defined by the Disability Discrimination Act (the DDA). This is a very broad definition of disability, which includes physical and intellectual disabilities, learning disorders such as dyslexia and dysgraphia, and mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression.
Further information for parents, guardians and carers can be found on the NCCD website: https://www.nccd.edu.au/sites/default/files/fact%20sheet%20for%20parents%20guardians%20and%20carers.pdf

Transition to High School
Year 6 Parents, Carers and Students will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from Runcorn State High School, Sunnybank State High School and Macgregor State High School on Term 2, Week 10 - Thursday 23/6/22, from 2pm -4pm on the Basketball Court. No RSVP required. Please come along and find out more about our local high schools and pick up enrolment paperwork. Please contact Ms Matlock if you require further information by email rmatl2@eq.edu.au or phone (07) 3323 8777.
School Uniform
At Runcorn State School we have high expectations around the wearing of our school uniform. With the cooler months here, it is important to us as a school community that all students present in the correct winter uniform. When all the students are wearing the same uniforms, students identify with each other and the school at large more easily. They feel a sense of similarity, familiarity and belongingness with the school and all its members. This helps build a sense of unity amongst all the school students. If your child does not have a school jumper, please organise one for them. It is important that all parents do a check of uniforms and jumpers to ensure they are clearly named.

Author Visits
I was lucky enough to have a visit from some 1D authors. Kai, Nicholas, Eliza and Anson confidently shared their recounts of some traditional stories with me. I was very impressed with their descriptive vocabulary.
Alvin in 5/6F was kind enough to share with me his poem ‘Mushrooms’ that he worked on in his spare time. I hope you enjoy reading it as ‘mush’ as I did!
Mushrooms
In the forest so dark, so damp
hoping for a light or just a lamp
Nowhere to go, nothing to see
Only the darkness in front of me
Tired and starving wanting to eat
My stomach’s throbbing for something sweet
Hey! What’s that I glare around
Hearing a slobbering eating sound
I slowly stumble closer shivering with fear
my heart’s pumping and then I hear
something, something is moving closer
What is it? Give me an answer
Then in front of me appears an old woman
revealing her hand and there’s a mushroom
her smile and eyes are so tempting
I slowly grab her object, painfully accepting
I glance at her and then I smile
Take a bite it tastes, it tasted quite mild
I step back feeling a lack of air
The old woman chuckles as if she didn’t care
And then I gradually black out
I wake up with a tremendous shout
It was all a dream my mother said
then why was there so much mud in my bed?
Report Cards
Semester 1 report cards will be distributed in the last week of Term 2. You may notice some subtle differences to your child’s report card this semester.
Distribution of Achievement
For the first time, a Distribution of Achievement graph will be included on all student’s report card. The graph will show the percentage of students in your child’s cohort that achieved at each reporting level for each Learning Area. This was a function that in the past, each family could request if required.
Change in Overall Comments
Overall comments of each student will now reflect the individual learning behaviours your child has demonstrated throughout Semester 1. You will notice that the language of The Learning Assets (Collaborator, Communicator, Thinker, Self-Manager & Researcher) have been included to also reflect our use of inquiry teaching and learning throughout the school. If you wish to further discuss your child’s progress in any Learning Area/s, please do not hesitate to contact your classroom teacher.
Subjects on Report Card
At the end of 2021, there were changes made to the Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Framework in relation to the mandatory and recommended time for teaching and assessing each Learning Area. While elements of all Learning Areas are taught every term in every year level, you may notice subjects such as The Arts, Technologies and Health & Physical Education have not been included in your child’s report for Semester 1, they will appear in Semester 2 and vice versa.
Health and Physical Education
All students receive a weekly Health lesson from our specialist Zoya Daryau, and weekly Physical Education from our specialist Leah Sutherland. On report cards the achievement mark is a combination of tasks completed in both Health and Physical Education lessons, however you may only see one of these specialists’ name on your child’s report card.
If you have any further questions regarding academic reporting feel free to contact myself or your child’s classroom teacher.

From the Resource Centre
If you have some spare time to cover some books please come and see us at the Resource Centre. We have some fantastic new books which need to be covered before students can borrow them. Book covering is easy and we are happy to teach you the knack!
You can take a box of 10 books home to cover or if you prefer you could cover these books in the library. All help is greatly appreciated. Looking forward to seeing you.
Thank you,
The Resource Centre Team
Year 6 Maths Extension
The Year 6 Maths Extension group had a special visit from Ms Whittle, HOD of Mathematics at Runcorn State High School, this week. They continued exploring angles, created their own clinometer and used trigonometry to measure the height of the roof of Girrawheen Place. A great afternoon with thinking and self-managing skills put to good use.

Sporting News
Senior Athletics Carnival
Senior Athletics Carnival will be held Term 2, Week 8, Thursday 9 and Friday 10 June. Children are encouraged to wear their house-coloured ribbons and clothes without logos to get in the spirit. Everyone must wear a hat and sunscreen. Trials are being finalised this week. Keep those rain dances packed away, so we can have some sunny weather. Come along and cheer on your children. Go Acacia! Go Banksia! Go Grevillea!
Gala Days
It was disappointing that due to rain Gala Days were unable to take place. Information has already been sent about requesting a refund. Fingers crossed Semester 2 is rain free.
Hats
Please ensure your child has a hat as they may not be able to participate in their PE lesson without one.
Netball Bibs
I have some netball bibs that need new elastic sewn into them. Is there anyone who can help? If you can assist, please contact me via email lsuth18@eq.edu.au.

Environment Club News
May/June Edition
Dear Runcorn Community,
The Environment Club (formally Garden Club) have fully implemented the Organic Waste program. Vegetables, herbs and pest repellent flowers have been planted in the Heritage Garden. Classes can visit at any time and it is nice to see the students exploring this space before school. The covers have been placed over the gardens to help to deter possums feasting on the crops.
The collection of BREAD BAGS and WRAP BAGS is going very well. The official WONDER boxes have arrived. One is in the front office and one is in the PCYC front entrance for the collection of both bread bags and wrap bags from any bread company, not just Wonder. The bags collected will be swapped for points towards sporting equipment for the school.
The school has also been registered to be Compost Heroes, a completely FREE school initiative launched by Maze - An Australian leader in compost & gardening solutions. Listed below is the benefits to the school. We are still waiting for this to arrive at the school.
- Free to join & receive x1 kitchen caddy for every classroom. (These will replace the containers)
- Gain entry to win up to $2000 of Maze gardening equipment.
- 30% Discount Code to use on Maze online store.
Information brochures are being sent to the school to hand out to students so watch out for these in your child’s bag. There will also be further Supporting Educational material is coming as well.
Another venture that Environment Club, along with the P&C, are hoping to launch, will be the collecting of bottles etc for the containers for change program. With help from valued community members, we are aiming to have this starting in Term 3.
Environment Club is open to all year levels and will be held:
Tuesday lunchtime 11:30am – Ms Daglish (children need to listen for the announcement)
If you have time, check out the Subpod in Prep garden and the Heritage Garden and we thank the community for support with both the collecting of fruit scraps and bread/wrap bags. Start hanging onto your bottles and we will announce when they can start coming into school with your child.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Norman's News
I have been having a totally “pawsome” time during the days that I’ve been at Runcorn this past fortnight. I have been working in small groups listening to many students who seem to have gone “barking” mad over reading. My tail just doesn’t stop wagging as many readers who were previously a little shy, find their confident voices and “duck hands” to read to each other, Mrs Schooth and me.
I also had the pleasure of some more “training” from some of the Year 4 students who designed and implemented an obstacle course for me to “run with” on one of the rare days when the sun was shining. I witnessed some great planning, sharing of ideas and brainstorming during this inquiry lesson. Well done boys – you played to my weakness and got me through all the obstacles with the promise of the reward. Apples were my favourite on the day!
As always, if you have any questions for Mrs Schooth about my role at Runcorn, please don’t hesitate to email jscho128@eq.edu.au. I know Mrs Schooth is always keen for your feedback and queries.
Until next time,
Big licks and tail wags,
Norman xx
