From the Principal
ANZAC
ANZAC Day is a very important day to me. My father served during WWII and my grandfather served during WWI. On Friday April 22 our school remembered generations of Australian servicemen and women who have defended our values and freedoms in wars, conflicts, and peace operations. I was humbled by the service at Runcorn State School. It was obvious to me that a great deal of time and effort was put into the lead up of the morning to ensure it was a respectful service. The manner in which our students conducted themselves during the service was a credit to those involved.
On April 25 it was also lovely to see students and staff marching at the Sunnybank RSL street parade and staying for the service that followed. Our students marched proudly alongside other community organisations to honour and remember the service and sacrifice of our fallen soldiers.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
P&C Slime Run
School events are an essential part of our Runcorn community. The P&C are focused on providing a mixture of events to cater to a wide audience. If you are new to our school, attending our events during the year is a fantastic way to get to know other parents, carers, children and the staff. It is the goal of the P&C to provide events which foster a spirit of community. Some events also provide the P&C with an opportunity to fundraise for our school. If an event is both enjoyable and profitable, this is great.
The recent slime run was just this sort of event. The joy on the faces of the students and staff was evident throughout the afternoon. As always, these events wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of our volunteers. So, to them I say a big thank you!
If you are able, reach out and get involved. Your help will always be welcome - remember that one great event can turn strangers into lifelong friends.
Religious Instruction
Please note that Religious Instruction has had to be delayed by one week and will now commence Monday 16th May.
Landscape Update
Some playground plans so you can see what is coming - all very exciting!
Eid Mubarak to all or families celebrating Eid this week.

NAPLAN is an annual assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It tests the types of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. The tests cover skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy. The assessments will be undertaken from Tuesday 10 May 2022 – Thursday 19 May 2022.
This year Runcorn State School will participate in NAPLAN Online for all subtests except Year 3 writing which will still be paper based. NAPLAN Online is a tailored test that adapts to student responses, presenting students with questions that may be more or less difficult – resulting in better assessment and more precise results.
An account of students, parents/carers and teachers sharing their insights about the benefits of NAPLAN Online can be seen at NAPLAN accessibility (6 min 23s). An explanation of the tailored tests can be viewed at Tailored testing video (3 min 6s).

Our school team put in a strong performance last Wednesday. There was plenty of mud & a few rain showers, it didn’t stop students for striving for Personal Bests. Special mention goes to Max who finished 10th & Kenji who finished 13th.

Nominations are in and we are ready to start trials. All children are entered in 3 events. If your child has an injury, can you please inform Leah @ lsuth18@eq.edu.au or their class teacher.

Gala Days
Unfortunately, some of the grounds were unsafe to play on last week & despite an enormous effort to find alternative grounds, it was unable to go ahead. Our next Gala Day is Friday 27th of May. If your child goes to PCYC, you will need to email them so they can let your children leave early.
Hats
Please ensure your child has a hat on their PE days. As we are no longer in the pool in Term 2, all students must have a hat to participate. These can be purchased from the Uniform Shop.

QSO Excursion
The students of Instrumental Music had a wonderful time attending the QLD Symphony Orchestra's 'Sounds like an Orchestra' concert at QPAC this week on Tuesday May 3rd. Students were shown performances using the different instrument families by themselves and in combination to present beautiful music including Harry Potter and The Wellerman. Our Runcorn SS students were a credit to the school with their behaviour when travelling on the train, during the concert and also when enjoying lunch at South Bank. Well done Runcorn students!

Environment Club News
May Edition
Dear Runcorn Community,
During Term 1, the Environment Club (formally Garden Club) implemented the Organic Waste program. Each class is now collecting Fruit Break scraps and depositing them in the Subpod in the Prep garden area. Herbs and vegetable plants have just been planted around the Subpod as well. Hopefully, there will some fresh chives and basil for the tuckshop soon.
Another initiative the Environment Club is supporting is the collection of BREAD BAGS and WRAP BAGS. A box has been placed in the front of the office for the collection of both bread bags and wrap bags from any bread company, not just Wonder. Look for this poster in the office and in each of the classrooms.
The bags collected will be swapped for points towards sporting equipment for the school.
We are hoping that the next venture for Environment Club will be the collecting of water bottles for the containers for change program. Volunteers from the community will be needed to collect the bottles from the school and deposit them at the appropriate drop off point. (Watch this space for further information). If you can volunteer, please email Jenni McNamara on the email below.
Environment Club is now open to all year levels and will be held:
Tuesday lunchtime 11:30am – Ms Daglish (listen for the announcement)
If you have time, check out the Subpod in Prep garden and we thank the community for support with both the collecting of fruit scraps and bread/wrap bags.
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

Norman's News
I would “Normanly” write a lot of information to you all, but with all the excitement of the past couple of weeks, I have decided instead to let the photos bark louder than my words! Thank you so much to everyone who participated in the activities at school associated with my extended birthday, and who came along to my “Pawty with a Purpose”! We had so much fun with students, staff and the community and managed to raise some money for both the P&C and also for the RSPCA. Mrs Schooth was able to donate a generous $159.20 raised to the RSPCA to assist with the amazing work this charity does to promote animal welfare. Well done Runcorn!
Big licks and tail wags,
Norman xx
P&C News
WOW! What a spectacular display of Runcorn spirit at our Slime Splatacular Fun Run event held on Friday, 22 April. The excitement from everyone, especially students, was electric and it made Term 2 start off with a BANG! The first few weeks of Term 2 are busy ones with many events already being held and a few more still to come.
Event Wrap Up
The start of Term 2 has kept us busy with the Slime Run, Norman’s Birthday and Mother’s Day. We will also be holding the Election Day Sausage Sizzle and Bake Stall on the 21st May.
The Slime Run was a very successful afternoon of fun, colour, excitement, and SLIME! The amazing support from our student fundraisers, participants, and the support of our sausage sizzle, drinks and Zooper Doopers helped raise $7,567.05. This will go to helping upgrade iPad software for the students.
On Tuesday, 26th April, after much anticipation, the community finally got to celebrate Norman’s 1st Birthday. Thank you to Mrs Schooth and Mrs Ross who organised this on behalf of the school and allowing the P&C to sell delicious Norman cupcakes which seemed to be a hit with those who were able to snag one. Norman’s Birthday celebration raised $889.50.
This week saw our annual Mothers' Day stall held on Wednesday and Thursday. Thank you to all the families who supported this event. We wish all our Mum’s, Grandma’s, Nan’s, Auntie’s, and other significant female role models in our students lives a very Happy Mothers' Day on Sunday.
A massive THANK YOU to all the amazing volunteers and school staff for helping with our many events over the last few weeks. Without the generosity of people giving up their time we could not offer these events to our students.
“Volunteers are not paid -not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless”.

ANZAC Day Parade - Sunnybank RSL
It was such a privilege and an honour to be a part of the ANZAC Day Parade at the Sunnybank RSL on 25th April 2022. While the weather was not ideal, students and staff showed resilience and a real sense of community during the march and service. Thank you to all who came along to show their appreciation and respect to all who have served and who are currently serving our wonderful country.
