Newsletter Term 2 Week 1
From the Principal
Welcome
My sincere thanks to the whole Runcorn State School community for making me feel so welcome. I am so excited about being a part of this wonderful school community.
As I reflect on my few days at Runcorn I note the following observations of the school:
- Great excitement and joy with the return of students on the first day of the term
- Students using exceptional manners and greeting me wherever I go
- Staff and students engaging positively and the use of YCDI language
- Staff who care for and want the best for the students in their care
- A school where everyone is known and welcomed
- Pride in the school grounds and facilities
Overall a great impression of a community which places an emphasis on ensuring a positive experience for all. I look forward to delving deeper and spending more time gaining an understanding of what is valued in this community over the coming weeks.
Landscape Update
As you can see from the construction fencing along Ardargie Street, landscaping of the Nature Play and Playground areas has begun. The work extends from the Science Lab past the Pick-Up Area. This area is now a worksite with no access for school children or the community. This has also had implications regarding access from the Pick Up and Drop Off Zones as this area is temporarily closed. Brisbane City Council have provided new signage along Lampson Street as a safe alternative solution while construction is taking place. We thank you for your understanding while we await the completion of what will become an amazing space for students to enjoy.

From the Deputy Principal
NAPLAN is an annual assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It tests the types of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. The tests cover skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy. The assessments will be undertaken from Tuesday 10 May 2022 – Thursday 19 May 2022.
This year Runcorn State School will participate in NAPLAN Online for all subtests except Year 3 writing which will still be paper based. NAPLAN Online is a tailored test that adapts to student responses, presenting students with questions that may be more or less difficult – resulting in better assessment and more precise results.
An account of students, parents/carers and teachers sharing their insights about the benefits of NAPLAN Online can be seen at NAPLAN accessibility (6 min 23s). An explanation of the tailored tests can be viewed at Tailored testing video (3 min 6s).

Lego Club Donations
We are always searching for new ways to engage our students in a variety of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Maths) learning activities. We are looking at starting a Lego Club for our Junior (P-2) and Upper (3-6) school students. This will give participants an opportunity to create brick masterpieces and solve problems using Lego. In order for this to become a reality we need your help! We are asking for Lego donations of all shapes and sizes. If you can help out please send your donations to the library or front office.

Sporting News
District Cross Country
Due to the rain we had at the end of Term 1, the event was rescheduled. Our Runcorn school team will now compete on Wednesday 27th of April. Please ensure children are at school by 7.45am as the bus leaves at 8am sharp. They need to be in full Runcorn State School sports uniform wearing a hat and sunscreen with extra sunscreen in their bag to reapply. Spare clothing and shoes may help as children got a bit muddy crossing the creek last year. The event will take place at CJ Greenfields Sportsgrounds, Freeman Rd, Richlands. Good luck to all.
Gala Days
Bring on Friday 29th of April, our first Gala Day for the year! Students need to be at school by 8am sharp so we can change into team uniforms and mark the rolls. Buses leave at 8.30am. You must email Mrs Sutherland lsuth18@eq.edu.au by 3pm on Thursday 28th of April, the day before Gala Day, if you are taking your child home from the venue. Buses head home around 2pm and parents must pick up their children by then. Please ensure children have a hat, sunscreen, full lunch and snacks and at least 3 drink bottles. Let the fun begin!
Senior Sports Day & Athletics Trials
We are heading into Athletics season in PE and leading to our school sports day. During PE children will learn how to perform various athletics skills. They will need to nominate the events they wish to compete in. All children are required to try 3 events. Over the space of 3 afternoons, and lunchtimes if necessary, children will be trialling in these events to represent their house at Sports Day.

Norman's News
It is with much tail wagging that I have returned to school this week! All of my hoomans are now “pawfectly” well again and, after a relaxing holiday with my family and Harvey, I am looking forward to “digging my heels” into learning at Runcorn with you all.
I am also feeling “dog-gone” enthusiastic about the belated “pawty” for my first birthday on Tuesday 26th April from 3.15pm! It will be fun to take you all for “walkies” around the school, and giving a gold coin donation to the RSPCA will be a wonderful way to “suppawt” many animals in need. Our fantastic P&C will also have drinks and “pupcakes” for sale – I’m sure it won’t take me long to “sniff” those out!
“Last but not leashed”, I am grateful to those of you who sent through your photos ‘dressed like a dog’ as well as the many wishes that were emailed to me before the school holidays. The display of artwork and poems outside of the Resource Centre was a fabulous welcome back for me. “Fur what it’s worth”, it was all a little “mind-beagle-ing” and made me feel incredibly “impawtant”.
Big licks and tail wags,
Norman xx

ANZAC Day Street Parade and Community Services Sunnybank
For a number of years now, Runcorn State School has been represented at this community event on 25th April which commemorates all who served and died in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. This year, the parade commences at 8am with a community service following at 9am.
If your child would like to be a part of this parade, please meet Mrs Schooth and Mrs McNamara at 7.30am on the Sunnybank High School Oval (at the Boorman Street side). The parade will march from Boorman St, on to Lister St and then into Gager Street.
Students will be required to meet with their parents at the conclusion of the march. It will be at parental discretion whether you would like to remain on for the community service.
We hope you can join us. Students will need to come dressed in full school uniform, including their school hat.
If you have any questions regarding this, please do not hesitate to contact me at jscho128@eq.edu.au
Kind regards
Julie Schooth
